Philly had a college day for uh college people where you can go to a bunch of museums for free last week. So we went to two. She picked the Academy of Natural Sciences and I picked the UPenn Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. So we went to the ANS first:
There was a butterfly exhibit, it was basically a super hot, super moist (hmm I have a feeling this isn't the right word to use here, but it's all I can think of) green house with butterflies fluttering about. There was also a cacoonery, like a hatchery but with cacoons and no hatching of stuff. The hatchery was pretty cool, there were a bunch of pupa that were incubating, some already hatched and there were butterflies with their wings all folded in. The tour guide said that they hang upside down to let the blood flow into their wings so they would unfurl. We saw one do that, but it took a while to fully unfurl and we got kind of bored so we left.
There were other b-fly pics but they kinda sucked, the damn things won't stay still for a photo-op!!?!?!
This is a GIGANOTOSAURUS, it's kinda like a T-Rex but nicer...no just kidding it will swallow you whole and digest you whole too...well maybe it will bite off half of you and swallow that first then the other half, like that one time in that one movie, Jurassic Park. It's actually slightly bigger than a T-rex, so watch out. Some people may think GIGANOTOSAURUS is a silly name and that it can't possibly have existed (just because of the silly name). There can't possibly be any sane archeologists who would name such a GIGANTIC dinosaur with such a silly silly name. Well you would be only partially correct, because it was named by an amateur archeologist. Wikipedia says they existed, so what's up!!?!!? That's right! Sorry for the darkness, I tried to convey what it would be like to have such a REAL dinosaur sneak up on you in the middle of the night. Your abject terror would be similar to the shear terrifosity exhibited by the museum lady in the bottom center of this picture.
This is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Yes quite intimidating. Again, dark picture to convey what it would be like to sense something big coming up from behind you, then suddenly turning around and observing the very large, very sharp teeth possesed by such a beast of a reptile. You would of course also see skin and flesh, not just bones, cuz that would just be silly.
Another dino with a silly silly name. This one's a vegan called Ultrasaurus. Archeologists actually don't know much about this dinosaur. It might actually be the same beast as another dino called Supersaurus.
So we got tired of learning and did some silly time. I pretended I was a GIGANOTOSAURUS roaming the deserts of arizona. Yes quite terrifying.
She pretended to be eaten by me.
So that was the Academy of Natural Sciences. It was really fun for me, I liked her choice. We then went to eat hot dogs and left for UPenn's museum.
This is a replica of an Eqyptian throne room. Quite impressive isn't it.
Beautiful drawings on the columns and walls. Modern interior decorators could learn a thing or two.
It was kinda small though...ok not that funny, can't seem to funnify this picture.
This garden thing was outside when we took a break from all the anthropological exhibits. It was kind of tiring this museum.
Artsy picture of statue against Ivy League architecture.
That's it. I didn't like the UPenn museum as much, but apparently she did. You could probably spend a whole day and half of the following day seeing and reading all of the exhibits. They had stuff from ancient Egyptian culture, Roman, Greek, Byzantium, ancient Chinese culture, New Zealand/Polynesian culture, Jewish culture, a general Anthro section, and a bunch of others. There were 3 gigantic floors of exhibits. It's grand.
It was a really fun day. We went to King of Prussia to go to Costco and to the Largest Mall on the Eastern Seaboard. Twasn't that impressive, it was kinda sprawled out. But it was nice to be in a mall again among people. Costco was nice, haven't been in one in a while. Forgot to buy soap though, so I was showering with a tiny sliver of left over soap for a while there.
